I believe it is vitally important to be mindful of the genesis of interracial conflict and prejudice between equity-seeking groups. It does not occur in a vacuum. It emerges within the context of a white-dominated racist society which spews terrible messages against all people of color, as well as other oppressed groups. None of us is be immune from these powerful messages. When we believe the worst about our own group, it is an expression of internalized racism. When people of color believe the worst about other minority groups, they are expressing the internalized beliefs of the white racist society we live in.

The article, " Why I Hate Blacks," is a tragic and horrific manifestation of this phenomenon. However, I believe we are led astray from the common struggle against white oppression when this ugly incident leads to claims that "most" Asians are racist against Blacks, which I do not believe has documented basis anyway. What is documented is that there are many examples of hate crimes, as reflections of racial animosity, being perpetrated by people of color against each other. We must keep our eyes on the bigger picture of who has power and control. After all, it is not people of color who systematically benefit from racism. We must ask the question, "Who benefits when people or color are pitted against each other?"

In Unity ,
Keith Mar
